Peters, Durbin, and Murray Demand Answers on Gutting of DHS Oversight Office and Protection of Civil Rights and Civil Liberties at DHS
July 25, 2025

“In light of your decision to shutter key Department of Homeland Security (DHS) oversight offices in March 2025, recent whistleblower disclosures related to this decision, and disclosures made in ongoing litigation, we request additional information regarding how DHS is carrying out its statutory duties to protect individual rights and liberties and to ensure our immigration system functions properly,” wrote the senators.

Senator Murray Statement on Federal Arrests of Spokane Residents for Protests Against ICE
July 15, 2025

“Let’s be perfectly clear about Trump’s unconstitutional immigration crackdown: he is diverting limited federal resources away from pursuing violent criminals to instead round up individuals with no criminal record—and now, apparently, he’s going after peaceful protestors as well. We cannot be silent and I will be contacting DOJ directly regarding this gross abuse of federal resources.”

Cortez Masto, Colleagues Press Administration on Conflicting Orders Fueling Uncertainty for Afghans Living in U.S.
July 15, 2025

“As you are aware, many Afghan allies that received TPS stood shoulder to shoulder with American servicemembers for nearly two decades during the war in Afghanistan. Many fled to the United States out of fear of persecution by the Taliban or retaliation for such cooperation with the United States. It is unsafe for political targets of the Taliban to be forced to return against their will. TPS protections must be maintained for Afghan nationals in the United States,” the lawmakers concluded.

Kelly, Durbin, Padilla, Colleagues Press Trump Administration on Weaponizing Immigration Court Hearings to Trap, Arrest, Deport Immigrants
July 15, 2025

“We are extremely concerned by reports of a recent initiative to arrest and detain noncitizens at their immigration court hearings, and in many cases, dismiss their immigration cases without advance notice and while hiding the government’s intent to arrest them,” wrote the senators. “These actions prevent noncitizens from having their fair day in court and raise serious legal and due process concerns. They also make clear that this Administration is not targeting the worst criminals and threats to public safety, instead redirecting staff and resources away from drug trafficking and human trafficking and towards these operations targeting noncriminal immigrants who are following the law and showing up for their day in court.”

Senator Murray Statement on Trump Travel Ban
June 5, 2025

"Today, U.S. Senator Patty Murray (D-WA), Vice Chair of the Senate Appropriations Committee, issued the following statement in response to President Trump’s sweeping travel ban on 12 countries and other travel restrictions announced yesterday:

“President Trump’s travel ban is not about making our country safer, it’s about slamming the door shut to vulnerable refugees and asylum seekers for no reason other than that Trump doesn’t like their race or religion.

“Blanket travel bans arbitrarily discriminate and punish people who are seeking to enter our country legally, including Afghans fleeing the Taliban, and people seeking to reunite with their loved ones who are already in our country."

In Senate Floor Speech, Senator Murray Calls Out Trump’s Staggeringly Lawless and Inhumane Immigration Policy
April 30, 2025

"Today U.S. Senator Patty Murray (D-WA), Vice Chair of the Senate Appropriations Committee, took to the Senate floor to deliver a speech on President Trump’s lawless immigration policy. Senator Murray highlighted the absence of any semblance of due process for—in many cases—legal residents with no criminal record being detained and deported—and even sent to a prison in El Salvador with no outside contact and no end date. She also discussed how Trump’s crackdown has caused confusion for international students, fear among farmworkers, and led to U.S. citizens being detained, having their homes raided, and even to some U.S. citizens who are children being deported with their parents."

The Administration’s decision to revoke this critical protection has been temporarily put on hold by a court order, postponing the harm it will cause to approximately 350,000 people who remain at risk of losing TPS."

Van Hollen, Ivey Lead Bicameral Letter Urging Administration to Continue Legal Protections for Cameroonians in the U.S. Who Have Fled Violence, Humanitarian Disaster
April 4, 2025

Today, U.S. Senator Chris Van Hollen (D-Md.) and U.S. Representative Glenn Ivey (D-Md.) sent a bicameral letter with over 30 of their colleagues to President Donald Trump urging the Administration to extend Temporary Protected Status (TPS) to Cameroonians living legally in the United States, as ongoing violence, instability, and humanitarian crises continue to pose a grave threat to anyone returning to Cameroon. In their letter, the lawmakers highlight that extending and redesignating these protections for Cameroonians already in the U.S. advances American interests in supporting counterterrorism efforts and strengthening our economy.

April 3, 2025

Senators to Secretaries Rubio and Noem: “These actions undermine America’s longstanding commitment to humanitarian protection and place thousands of vulnerable individuals—many of whom served alongside U.S. armed forces—at grave risk”

Senator Edward J. Markey (D-Mass.) joined Senator Alex Padilla (D-Calif.), Ranking Member of the Senate Judiciary Immigration Subcommittee, Democratic Whip Dick Durbin (D-Ill.), Ranking Member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, and Senator Peter Welch (D-Vt.), Ranking Member of the Senate Judiciary Constitution Subcommittee, and 17 Senators in condemning the dismantling of the U.S. Refugee Admissions Program (USRAP), including a funding freeze that has halted refugee processing and resettlement. The indefinite refugee ban and funding freeze have stranded tens of thousands in dangerous conditions, separated families, and left recently resettled refugees in the United States without the legally required support.

Padilla, Schiff Urge Attorney General Bondi to Reverse Course on Unjustified Firings of Immigration Judges
March 31, 2025

"U.S. Senators Alex Padilla (D-Calif.), Ranking Member of the Senate Judiciary Immigration Subcommittee, and Adam Schiff (D-Calif.) joined 64 House and Senate Democrats in urging Attorney General Pam Bondi to reverse the Executive Office for Immigration Review’s (EOIR) alarming decision to fire immigration judges even as the immigration courts currently face a staggering backlog of immigration cases. In February, EOIR abruptly fired 20 immigration judges, removed all nine Board of Immigration Appeals (BIA) judges appointed during the Biden Administration, and terminated four individuals in senior EOIR leadership positions, with indications they may remove even more judges."

Senator Murray Leads Colleagues in Reintroducing Legislation to Prevent the Shackling and Mistreatment of Pregnant Women in ICE and CBP Custody
March 18, 2025

“Shackling pregnant women in immigration custody is not only unnecessary, it is dangerous and traumatic for women and their pregnancies—and there is simply no justifiable reason for this barbaric practice,” said Senator Murray. “At a time that we have a president whose approach to immigration appears to be cruelty for cruelty’s sake, it is more important than ever that we act to ensure all pregnant women in custody are treated humanely and with respect. I will continue to fight against the gross mistreatment of pregnant women in immigration detention and am proud to join my friend Rep. Garcia in reintroducing this important legislation.”

Hirono, Ossoff Lead Colleagues in Demanding Trump Administration Ensure Legal Representation for Vulnerable Children in Immigration System
March 10, 2025

U.S. Senators Mazie K. Hirono (D-HI) and Jon Ossoff (D-GA) led 30 of their colleagues in sending a letter to Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and Secretary of the Interior Doug Burgum, demanding that the Trump Administration continue legal services for unaccompanied children caught up in the immigration system as required by law. Last month, the Trump Administration issued a stop work order to organizations that provide legal services for unaccompanied children. Later that week, following public pressure, the order was rescinded. In 2023, Senator Hirono reintroduced the Fair Day in Court for Kids Act, legislation to provide unaccompanied children with access to legal representation when they appear in proceedings before an immigration judge.

Jan. 16, 2025

Senator Murray: “We are talking $83 billion over the first three years to implement this bill—that’s more than the annual budget for the entire Department of Homeland Security. That’s a lot of money to spend on a bill that is going to cause chaos, punish legal immigrants, and undermine due process in America—all while drawing resources away from true threats.”
