“Dreamers in New Mexico and across the country are frontline health care workers, teachers, firefighters, police officers, and scientists. These inspiring young people are Americans in every sense of the word except on paper, and they want nothing more than to be productive members of their communities. Unfortunately, the Trump Administration doesn’t care about any of that and is indiscriminately sharing the private information of Dreamers. We need to ensure that Dreamers’ private information is not weaponized against them and is protected — full stop,” said Heinrich. “That’s why, for years, I’ve championed the Protect DREAMer Confidentiality Act to safeguard Dreamers’ DACA application information and provide DACA applicants with a sense of security as they continue on their paths to citizenship. I call on Congress to quickly take up and pass my legislation to make sure Dreamers are able to stay in school, keep working and contribute to our economy, and remain in their homes and neighborhoods.”
Sen. Martin Heinrich“As you are aware, many Afghan allies that received TPS stood shoulder to shoulder with American servicemembers for nearly two decades during the war in Afghanistan. Many fled to the United States out of fear of persecution by the Taliban or retaliation for such cooperation with the United States. It is unsafe for political targets of the Taliban to be forced to return against their will. TPS protections must be maintained for Afghan nationals in the United States,” the lawmakers concluded.

They also make clear that this Administration is not targeting the worst criminals and threats to public safety, instead redirecting staff and resources away from drug trafficking and human trafficking and towards these operations targeting noncriminal immigrants who are following the law and showing up for their day in court.”

Last week—following the Trump Administration’s recent termination of a contract that provides legal services for unaccompanied children who appear in immigrant court—Senator Hirono introduced The Fair Day in Court for Kids Act of 2025, legislation to provide unaccompanied children with legal representation when they appear in proceedings before an immigration judge.

“Using our military installations for these purposes threatens to divert DoD’s resources away from unit readiness and our national security enterprise,” which the lawmakers noted, "is a direct contradiction to [the Trump] administration’s statement earlier this year that one of [its] top priorities is to ‘have a ready, able, and lethal military.’”

The Members condemned these actions as unconstitutional and a violation of Tribal sovereignty, calling for swift action to end racial profiling and protect Native communities.
Rep. Yassamin Ansari, Rep. Raúl Grijalva, Sen. Martin Heinrich, Rep. Jared Huffman, Rep. Teresa Leger Fernandez, Sen. Ben Ray Luján, Rep. Melanie Stansbury, Rep. Bennie Thompson, Rep. Gabe Vasquez"U.S. Senator Martin Heinrich (D-N.M.) released the following statement after voting against legislation that would reallocate resources away from addressing violent crime and keeping communities safe and allow state attorneys general to second-guess federal immigration decisions, even on individual cases:
“If you commit a violent crime in the United States, you should be held accountable. And if you're unlawfully in the United States when you commit that crime, you should be deported.
“But this legislation does nothing to hold violent criminals accountable. Instead, it would impose a crushing weight on local and federal law enforcement, saddling ICE with an unfunded mandate costing up to $83 billion and forcing local law enforcement to shift their attention away from violent crimes. This legislation could even force the release of those who committed violent crimes, to make room for those who committed nonviolent ones — a nonsensical outcome that would harm rather than help our communities.”
Sen. Martin Heinrich"Though the U.S. immigration system remains broken, immigrants are crucial to growing the labor force and supporting economic output. Immigrants have helped expand the labor supply, pay nearly $580 billion a year in taxes, possess a spending power of $1.6 trillion a year, and just last year contributed close to $50 billion each in personal income and consumer spending. Congress must reform and modernize the immigration system while also cementing the immense economic benefits associated with immigration. Time and time again, Democrats have attempted to do so through comprehensive immigration reform but have been blocked by Republicans who continue to use the issue to sow division."
Sen. Martin Heinrich"U.S. Senators Ben Cardin and Van Hollen (both D-Md.), along with more than a dozen other senators, wrote to President Joe Biden requesting that his administration “provide temporary humanitarian protections for Guatemalan nationals living in the United States.” The letter asks for the president to designate Temporary Protected Status for Guatemala or authorize Deferred Enforced Departure for Guatemalan nationals."
